October 27, 2025 – The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) is seeking public comment on the candidate OGC API – Environmental Data Retrieval (EDR) – Part 3: Service Profiles Standard. The OGC API – Environmental Data Retrieval (EDR) standard defines a family of lightweight web APIs that simplify access to environmental and other data. The Part 3: Services Profile Standard ensures interoperability between API implementations by defining a consistent approach to specifying a Profile of OGC API – EDR – Part 1: Core.
The OGC API – EDR – Part 1: Core Standard is designed to be flexible, easy to understand, and straightforward to implement for web developers. However, as adoption of the Core Standard grows, various user communities have identified the need to constrain certain aspects of this flexibility to improve interoperability between different server and client implementations within their specific domains of interest. These domain-specific configurations are known as Profiles.
The OGC API – EDR – Part 3: Service Profiles Standard defines a standardized approach for specifying such Profiles, ensuring consistency in how Collections and their Instances are described and implemented.
The standard includes Requirements, Recommendations and Permissions for creating Profiles and conforms to the OGC Modular Specification (ModSpec) Standard.
By providing a consistent framework for defining Profiles, this approach not only enhances interoperability within EDR implementations but may also serve as a useful model for other OGC API Standards.
To Comment
The candidate OGC API – Environmental Data Retrieval – Part 3: Service Profiles Standard is available for review and comment for a period of 30 days. Comments are due by November 27, 2025.
